Citizen Commitment Time volunteers in Hong Kong help out at Boccia Championships.
Volunteering colleagues helped to run the two-day Asia & Oceania Boccia Championships 2015 event in Hong Kong on 13 and 14 June. For the participating athletes the stakes were high, as the winners of the Championships earn a ticket to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Our CCT volunteers supported the organizing committee, helped with the catering arrangements of the athletes and of course cheered and supported them during the competition. A special Appreciation Trophy was presented by the organization for our participation as volunteers. The event left the Societe Generale volunteers with great admiration for all the athletes, who displayed great mental strength and determination.
What is Boccia?
Boccia is a precision ball sport, similar to bocce and related to bowls and petanque. The sport is contested at local, national and international levels by athletes with more severe physical disabilities. In 1984 it became a Paralympic sport and it is now being practiced in over fifty countries worldwide. Boccia is one of only three Paralympic sports that have no counterpart in the Olympic programme.
