In the framework of the partnership between the “Sport dans la Ville Association” and Societe Generale, around ten young women involved in the association’s activities had the opportunity to visit the Group’s headquarters in London and meet employees to discuss their professional aspirations.
Sport dans la Ville and Societe Generale have been working together for several years. The association, which works in disadvantaged areas of Lyon and helps young people through sport, has been supported by the Societe Generale Solidarity Foundation since 2007. This long-term partnership has enabled the association to develop several professional integration programmes, and since 2011 it has also supported the “L dans la Ville” programme. This particular initiative gives young women the opportunity to explore their career options by visiting companies and meeting the professionals who work there. It also gives them the chance to broaden their horizons by discovering new cities.
Nine out of the 275 programme participants set off on a three-day visit to London between 13th and 16th February 2012. The young women visited many places including a French company in London - Societe Generale.
The UK CSR team prepared a programme explaining the Group’s activities. After a brief presentation, the group met with employees to talk about their future career options. This session really highlighted the importance of speaking a foreign language to improve one’s career perspectives.
After this visit, the young women took part in a skills-building (notably teamwork) activity organised by a London association. Split into two groups, the two teams had to construct a bridge made from newspaper - the winning team won a bumper bag of sweets!
The afternoon was set aside to visit the Group’s offices. The women visited the Director’s office, the planted roof terrace but what impressed them most was the electric atmosphere on the trading floor!
This visit was extremely rewarding for the participants and Societe Generale employees alike: “It was a really good experience! We were a bit scared at first but it gave us the chance to hone some of our skills like public speaking. I’d really recommend other Societe Generale employees to get involved in these types of initiatives,” said Carine.
On 11th April, another group of young women from the association will have the opportunity to visit La Défense in Paris where they will visit the Societe Generale headquarters and its contemporary art collection.
